The Select Committee in the House, investigating the insurrection committed on January 6th, 2021, has dominated the news this past week. While learning the truth and proving the complicity of Trump and his enablers is critical to the future of our system of government, another revelation came to us from Congressional hearings. The largely irrelevant reporting about subpoenas and the indictment of Bannon subsumed that story. I describe the news coming out about the actions of the Select Committee as irrelevant because subpoenas and even indictments are the beginning of a process, not an end. Much of the work done by the committee is likely to yield actionable results in months rather than next week or next month.
I would argue the evidence that Trump and his sycophants in the administration stifled the true nature and danger of Covid 19 is the most critical story of the week.
In case you missed it, here is an article laying out the timeline and details.

Those of us who have been paying attention intuited this as it was happening. Every press conference or briefing Trump held on Covid in early 2020 was filled with lies and misdirection about the severity of the pandemic.
Having the evidence and testimony from senior managers at important agencies is a smoking gun. For a President of the United States to intentionally mislead the public about a deadly virus overtaking our country has to be a criminal act. Congress and the DOJ should focus on the criminality of these intentional, despicable actions, not in place of investigating the events of January 6th, rather in addition to the same.
For almost two years, I have participated with a group of activists known as #TeamJustice. Led by Glenn Kirschner, a formal federal prosecutor, this group pushes for full accountability and consequences for crimes committed by Trump and others during his term. There were many.
Chief among the crimes we believe Trump committed are the lies and misinformation he forced his advisors to communicate. Trump bullied, threatened, and overrode his staff, scientific advisors, and agency heads to salvage his re-election prospects. These actions are not just despicable; they are patently illegal and, in addition, are violations of his oath as President. While the breach of an oath may seem quaint in today's environment, we must keep in mind that the President of the United States is sworn to protect and defend the country from enemies foreign and domestic. Defending us from a clear, known pandemic danger certainly falls within those responsibilities.
While heartened to know that the Select Committee is actively pursuing those responsible for the unprecedented scar on our history that occurred on January 6th, I believe this proof of clearly criminal, dangerous, and irresponsible activity is worse. Trump's actions during the early days of the pandemic cost the lives of several hundred thousand Americans. Of course, this virus would have taken many lives no matter what any leader might have done. But, experts in the field have publicly stated that up to forty percent of the deaths from Covid could have been avoided had the White House been more forthcoming, truthful, and realistic in its communications. The facts now demonstrate that the Trump political machine intended to preserve his re-election chances at the expense of our safety.
How much more damage shall we suffer from the depraved current rendition of the GOP? The Republican Party is unrecognizable today. Their loyalty to Trump and his dangerous rhetoric even as he is no longer in office is nothing more than a blatant attempt at continued existence.
Let us see what comes of these revelations in the coming weeks. But, please know that objective evidence of Trump's deplorable actions during the early days of the pandemic cost many American lives.
